Did you know that April 23rd is officially World Table Tennis Day? The date isn’t random—it pays tribute to Ivor Montagu, the founder and first president of the ITTF, who organized the very first World Championships back in 1926. This means 2026 marks exactly 100 years of global competition! Not bad for a sport some still dismiss as a “basement pastime.” 😉
Health, Well-being, and Inclusion
The theme for 2026 is Health and Well-being. As a coach, this makes me incredibly happy because it’s a message we need to hear more often. What moves me most about this day is that it focuses on inclusion and participation, not just medals.
How many other sports allow a 70-year-old grandfather, his 40-year-old son, and his 10-year-old granddaughter to compete on relatively equal footing around the same table? I’ve witnessed this hundreds of times, and it never fails to make me smile. This is where sport finds its deepest meaning: coming together, challenging each other, and having fun.
Mindfulness at 100 mph
For those who think table tennis isn’t “real” exercise—the research is clear. It is elite training for reflexes, coordination, and concentration. But beyond the physical, it is a powerful tool for mental health.
Playing table tennis demands complete presence. The ball moves too fast to let your mind wander or ruminate on negative thoughts! If you want to practice mindfulness without sitting in a lotus position, pick up a paddle. Give it a try—you’ll thank me later.
