A good net shot is not always about power. Often, it comes from a compact, stable, and well-directed motion. The goal of the punch volley is to take the ball early and keep the paddle stable to put your opponent in trouble.
Technique for Pressure
Unlike a simple block, the punch volley adds a short forward push to redirect speed and force an error. To execute this effectively:
- Keep the wrist firm: Avoid flashy wrist action.
- Maintain structure: Keep the paddle head in front of you and the elbow compact.
- Contact point: Ensure contact is slightly in front of the body.
- Balance check: If the ball is behind your shoulder or you are off balance, it is better to block or reset instead of attacking.
Strategic Targeting
To finish the point, target selection is key. Aim for:
- The opponent’s feet or the hip to jam their movement.
- The “middle” space between two players in doubles.
- The open court when the ball is high enough.
The practical rule for intermediate players is to attack high balls, apply pressure at chest height, and respect low balls. Success comes from less motion, more structure, and a chosen target.
